Bamboo pads — what are they, and why are more people choosing them?
Share
Bamboo pads are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to conventional pads. But what exactly are they, how do they differ, and are they the right choice for you? We’ll break it down for you.
What is a bamboo bandage?
A bamboo pad is a disposable pad in which the top layer—the part that comes into direct contact with the skin—is made of bamboo fibers instead of synthetic plastic. Bamboo is a natural material with soft, breathable properties that absorb moisture and wick it away from the skin.
BAM's Bamboo Pads are made with an OEKO-TEX and FSC-certified bamboo surface layer. They contain no plastic film in contact with the skin, are fragrance-free, and are individually wrapped in bio-based corn-derived film.
What makes bamboo pads different from regular pads?
The material against the skin
Conventional pads often have an inner layer of synthetic plastic (polyethylene) that touches the skin. This traps moisture, raises the temperature, and can irritate sensitive skin—especially with prolonged use. The bamboo outer layer is naturally breathable and wicks moisture away from the skin instead of trapping it.
Breathability
Bamboo is one of the most breathable natural materials used in textiles. This means better air circulation, a cooler feel, and a lower risk of irritation and discomfort—whether you’re having an easy day or a tough one.
No perfumes or unnecessary additives
BAM's pads contain no perfumes, no fragrances, and no synthetic dyes. Simple ingredients. Transparent ingredients.
The packaging
Each pad is individually wrapped in bio-based film made from corn instead of fossil-based plastic. It’s a small difference that adds up.
Are bamboo pads suitable for all types of periods?
BAM's Bamboo Pads are suitable for both day and night use and come in a style designed for both light and heavy flow. The pad's absorbent core is the same as in conventional pads—it's the outer material that makes the difference.
• Daytime : ideal for all flow rates
• At night : the longer model provides extra support for restless nights
• Sensitive skin: The bamboo surface is naturally gentler and causes less friction than plastic film
Are bamboo pads better for the environment?
Bamboo pads may be a better choice than conventional pads—but they are still single-use products. Bamboo as a raw material is more sustainable than petroleum-based plastic: it grows back quickly, requires no pesticides, and has a lower carbon footprint per kilogram of material.
A bamboo diaper is not entirely biodegradable—the absorbent core still contains synthetic components. However, the amount of plastic per diaper is lower than in a conventional diaper.
An honest comparison: Menstrual cups and washable pads are the most eco-friendly option overall. Bamboo pads are a good middle-of-the-road option for those who want to reduce plastic use without changing their routine.
